Dragon Fli Empire are a hip-hop duo from Calgary who are the D-E-Finition of real hip-hop. They are inspired by true-school boom-bap classics. DFE consists of Teekay on the microphone and DJ Cosm on the tables and they are constantly providing a positive addition to hip-hop music. Their first album released was called Conquest(2004), followed by Invasion(2005), Intermission EP(2008) and finally Redefine(2009). All of these discs are worth your dollar so pick them up if you get a chance. You can find out more about them from their Myspace and Facebook pages

They will be performing in Okotoks, Alberta this Saturday, May 9th, 2010 at Dee’z Nightclub along with Ricca Razor Sharp, MC Dubbs and Reecy Peacy. You can find out more at the Facebook group

Here are a couple of my favorite Dragon Fli Empire tracks. Make sure to pick up some discs at the show if you like it!

The Random Humans

The Random Humans are an alternative hip-hop group who have just recently appeared on the scene. Made up of MC Deception from Longview, Alberta and DJ/Producer Beatsmith Bear from Vancouver, B.C., these Canadian artists truly know the meaning of real hip-hop. MC Deception started making a name for himself in Alberta, then suddenly moved to Vancouver where he met Bear and started turning heads. Deception’s masterfully crafted metaphors and references shine through perfectly on Bear’s original and crisp beats. Currently, The Random Humans have only released one self-titled EP with 3 songs, but Deception has a catalog of older material which can be found here (You’ll have to sign up which is free and quick).

The first track on the EP, “Can’t Escape” starts the disc with a darker tone and a menacing bass-line. Decep comes in with a darker style than his earlier joints and lays down some ill verses about the global economic situation, and the chorus is perfect with an ominous hymn in the background. The second track, “Like Yesterday” starts in with a dope whistle and a lighter tone, then moves into the chorus and changes pace. The last track on the EP, “What You Do” is a perfect example of what these two are capable of. The lyrics and flow are flawless and the production is perfect. Check it out below. All in all, the EP is worth your time and if you get a chance, grab it! You can check these songs out at The Random Humans Myspace.

Deception also has a solo album that he recorded while in Vancouver, called “Under False Creek”. Definitely check that out too if you get a chance. Here are a couple more of my favorite early Deception tracks.

Jay Electronica

Jay Electronica is an up-and-coming emcee and producer from New Orleans. He is widely praised for his lyrical style and music which sometimes use samples from film soundtracks, such as “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”. Although he hasn’t released a full-length album, his library of songs is already growing, with some of his most popular songs being “Act 1: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (The Pledge)”“, “Exhibit A” and “Exhibit C”. Active in large online communities, Jay somehow seems to stay below the radar while still staying on everyones minds. There are a number of projects with his name attached to them such as a 9th Wonder collabo called “Big Brother”, as well as music with Just Blaze, Guilty Simpson and more. If you are sleeping on this cat, you are missing out tremendously.

Here’s a little hip-hop quotable from the man himself, from the track Exibit A:

I spit that, wonder rhymer shit, me and my conglomerates /
shall remain anonymous, caught up in the finest shit /
get that type of media coverage Obama get /
spit that Kurt Vonnegut, that blow your brain, Kurt Cobain, that Nirvana shit/
who gone bring the game back? who gone spit that Remo on the train tracks?
that gold rope, that 5 finger ring rap/
runnin with my same pack, you can find the Christ
where the lepers and the lames at.

Look out for more from Jay Electronica coming very soon. Act II is due to drop any day!
